Stat 431
Your challenge, should you choose to accept it:
Make the most beautiful and informative data visualization the world has ever seen! Tell a story about the data using only a single carefully crafted image.
The Dataset: https://www.kaggle.com/fec/independent-political-ad-spending
The Research Question: How are political ads created and funded?
You answer might include…
What organizations contribute heavily to the creation of political ads?
How does ad spending differ by party, ideology, office, location, etc.?
How has ad spending changed over time?
How does ad spending change over the course of an election?
Rules:
- You must turn in a single plot image, with no accompanying text or code.
- Side-by-side plots, such as those created with
facet_wrap
, are fine.
- Annotations on the image itself are okay; just not additional discussion.
- You may use any R package or tool that you want.
- (with the exception of Shiny, because it does not generate a static image)
- You may not use any other language or tool to edit your plot.
- For example, do not use MS Paint, Gimp, or Photoshop to add material to the plot.
- Do NOT turn in a knitted html!
- I want one single image, probably
.jpg
or .png
or .gif
- Do not put your name on the image.
Scoring:
You may work in pairs, if you like.
- To do so, you must add yourselves to the same group under the “Challenge 2 Group” category. This can be found in the “People” section of Canvas.
- Only one of you needs to upload your image(s).
You automatically receive 5 points for making a submission.
You will receive bonus points for the following achievements:
- +10 if Dr. G and Dr. B choose your submission as their favorite
- +10 if your submission is in the top 3
- +5 if your submission is in the top 10
- +5 if your submission is rated higher than Dr. Glanz’s
- +5 if your submission is rated higher than Dr. Bodwin’s
You may submit more than one entry, if you like. (But no more than 3 per person or group.)
- Submitting multiple entries does not give you more automatic points, but it can give you more chances for bonus points.
- That is, you get 5 points for completing the assignment, no matter how many entries you submit; however, you can receive bonus points from multiple submissions.
